A Celebration of Land and City Scapes - The Cape Town Month of Photography Festival

Photography Hannah Minkley

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s photography programme present a moment of reflection as they turn their lenses on the Eastern Cape area. The work, photographed within the more traditional landscape aesthetic, alludes to a sense of place, culture and history that make visible the Eastern Cape’s rich heritage and natural beauty. This group of second and third year student photographers presents a diverse perception of the environment within the body of work.
The landscape can prove to be a difficult master, demanding the photographer to align him or herself in accordance with its will. These photographers reflect intensely personal engagements within their relationship to the landscape and its play of light, form, colour, depth, and perspective.
The images do not only present a glimpse of a contemporary Eastern Cape but also document an ever-changing environment as man’s impact becomes more evident. What makes these images even more poignant is the fact that many of these districts have been earmarked for fracking (hydraulic fracturing) to extract shale gas and this will be the last time that they can be seen in such a pristine state.

Chaos and Synchronicities Exhibition - The Cape Town Month of Photography Festival

Photography Glenn Meyer

Second and third year photography students from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University photography programme present an exhibition that focuses on beach and street life.

Street photography tends to be ironic, anonymous and distanced from its subject matter and often concentrates on a single moment, caught at a climactic instant. It requires the cultivation of both intuition and fast reflexes, on the part of the photographer, to enable the anticipation of the convergent factors of a significant event and to subsequently be able to extract these synchronicities from the chaos of everyday life.

These images make both the photographer and the viewer reframe their attention to become more aware of their environment and the finer intricacies of the world around us. The exhibition presents small, detailed and intimate works which show a curiosity about what is going on in the world, a respect for what is happening, and a desire to transcribe it visually as they learn to become observers and commentators of the human condition.
